MLK Day Open House & Black Cowboys Opening Reception

January 15 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Walk with The NIC as we join ServeWyoming for the MLK Jr. Day/Equality Day March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy.
The Annual MLK Jr./Equality Day march begins at Art 321 at 10 am on January 15th which will lead to a celebration and service project at the First United Methodist Church on 2nd Street.
Following the MLK service and march, join us at the Nicolaysen Art Museum for the opening of our new exhibit Black Cowboys: The Silent and Forgotten Riders of the Rockies. This exhibit was assembled by local activist Jimmy Simmons in an effort to recognize the contributions of the thousands of Black people who made Wyoming their home over our rich history and depicts these forgotten riders with the full context and significance of its subjects.
The open house will be from 1-4 PM with coffee from the Bourgeois Pig and will feature a discussion with Jimmy Simmons starting at 2 PM. Simmons has been a leader in Wyoming civil rights for decades, serving as the Casper NAACP President and dedicating his life to the recognition and advancement of Black people in Wyoming ever since, and we feel so fortunate to be able to share this exhibit with his knowledge and passion informing it. Admission is free so please spread the word about this one-of-a-kind artistic and historical experience.
The Nicolaysen Art Museum is proud to be a part of this day of awareness, remembrance, and community to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and shed light on vital Black History right here in Wyoming. For more information on the march and open house, call the Nicolaysen Art Museum at 307-235-5247.
